Privacy policy

Last updated September 21, 2026

Mia Chara is a private journal. This page explains what it stores, who can see it, and how you can take it with you or delete it. The short version: your entries are yours, we don’t sell them, show them to anyone, or use them for advertising.

Who runs Mia Chara

Mia Chara is run by Tracey Higginbotham, who is responsible for your data. Questions or requests go to hello@miachara.app.

What we store

  • Your account: your email address, an optional display name, your time zone (so “today” means your today), and your login details. Passwords are handled by our login provider and stored only as a secure hash.
  • Your journal: your entries, the notes and categories you add, favorites, any photos or videos you attach, and the reflections and monthly memories built from your entries. We also keep a note of which writing prompts you’ve been shown, so you aren’t shown the same one again soon.
  • Your settings: reminder time, which emails you’ve turned on, and similar preferences.
  • Email records: which emails were sent to you, when, and whether delivery succeeded, so you never get the same one twice.
  • Technical data: a login cookie that keeps you logged in, and the standard request logs (such as IP address and browser type) our hosting providers keep for security and troubleshooting.

We don’t use analytics, advertising trackers, or tracking pixels. The only cookies are the ones needed to keep you signed in.

How we use it

  • To run your journal: save entries, show your calendar, build your monthly memories.
  • To notice repeats. When you save an entry, Mia Chara compares it with your own past entries on our servers to spot when you’re writing the same thing again. It only ever compares your entries with your own.
  • To send the emails you’ve turned on, and essential account emails such as login links.
  • To keep the service secure and fix problems.

We never sell your data, share it with advertisers, show it to other users, or use your entries to train AI models.

Emails

The daily reminder, weekly digest and monthly memories emails are all off until you turn them on in Settings. The weekly digest and monthly memories emails include the text of your entries, because that’s their purpose. Every one of these emails has an unsubscribe link that works in one click.

Now and then we may email you directly: an occasional nudge or personal note, which you can opt out of, and important service announcements (for example, a change to this policy), which go to every account.

Who can see your entries

Only you, with three exceptions: emails you choose to receive, the technical access explained below, and Anthropic, which receives the short “one good thing” line from some entries while AI help is on. You can turn AI help off in Settings. Services we rely on has the details. Other users can’t see anything of yours. Our admin tools are built so they can’t show entry text: they show account details like your email address, how many entries you have, and when you last wrote.

Your journal is protected in transit and at rest, and access is locked to your account at the database level. It is not end to end encrypted, which means someone with direct access to the database, such as the app’s operator or our database host, could technically read your entries. We don’t, and our tools aren’t built to. If you turn on the weekly digest or monthly memories emails, our email provider keeps copies of those sent emails for a limited time.

Services we rely on

These companies process data only to provide their part of the service:

  • Supabase: database, signing in, and file storage.
  • Vercel: hosting the website.
  • Resend: delivering email.
  • Cloudflare: domain name service, and forwarding mail sent to hello@miachara.app.
  • Anthropic (AI help): Mia Chara uses Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI models, for two small jobs. When a new entry sounds a lot like one you wrote before, we send that entry's “one good thing” line and up to 3 similar earlier lines, so Anthropic can tell us whether to show you a gentle “Sounds a little familiar” note. For your monthly memories, we send that month's “one good thing” lines (up to 40), the month and year, and your top categories, so Anthropic can write a one sentence summary. Each line is capped at 500 characters. We never send your longer reflections, your name, your email address, your photos, or your videos. You can turn AI help off anytime in Settings. When it's off, nothing from your journal goes to Anthropic.

Your choices and rights

  • Export: download everything you’ve written as a file from Settings, any time.
  • Delete your journal: remove all your entries and the photos and videos attached to them from Settings, and keep your account.
  • Delete your account: remove your account and everything in it from Settings. Deleted data can linger in our database provider’s routine backups for a short time before they expire; we can’t restore an account from them.
  • Anything else: to ask what we hold about you, correct it, or make any other privacy request, email hello@miachara.app.

We keep your data for as long as you have an account, and delete it when you delete it. One exception: if an administrator ever acts on your account (for example to help you, or to suspend it for abuse), a record of that action with your account ID is kept for security.

Children

Mia Chara is not meant for children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their data. If you believe a child under 13 has an account, email us and we’ll delete it.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the date at the top changes too. If a change affects how your journal text is used or shared, we’ll email you before it takes effect.
